Arizona is a tough place for windshields, where semi-trailers kick up volcanic rocks and stones with their tiny razor-like textures. Different windshield chips have different causes and require different techniques to repair. There are several different types of breaks that can result in the way a stone strikes the windshield. No two chips are alike, but they generally fall into the following categories:

• A stone windshield chip is caused by the most common windshield chip repair that occurs each year. Semi-trailers kick up volcanic rocks and stones that can cause a windshield to chip. Stone breaks typically take less than 30 minutes to repair.

• A pit windshield chip is a small break caused when a rock or stone or some debris hits the windshield. Although classified as a partial bullseye break. This is a more  common  windshield chip, caused by a stone or rock that strikes the windshield at lower velocity. This type of chip repair is more complicated as it requires drilling.

• A combination windshield chip requires a higher level of skill to repair and these occur when you've had a stone or rock strike your windshield. It starts out as a chip, however, if neglected your windshield will start to crack due to extreme temperature changes that are common in Flagstaff. Built-in stresses caused by manufacturing also lead to a long crack where there was only a small crack radiating.

• A half-moon windshield chip is a small stone break that looks just like half-circle in the windshield. This is typical chip, caused by a stone or rock that strikes the windshield at higher speed. This type of chip repair is more complicated as it requires drilling.

Don't delay repair

Delaying a chip repair may result in cracks forming. Cracks are more expensive to repair, if in fact, they can be repaired. Over time, dirt infiltrates a crack, the crack will spread to the point of unrepairability or the windshield will delaminate if neglected. When it reaches this point, your windshield cannot be fixed. A chip repair is a bargain compared to windshield replacement. A replacement windshield will likely cost about ten times the cost of a chip repair. And a chip repair goes a lot faster than a replacement to get you back on the road.

Stronger than new

You can avoid replacing your windshield, if you get that chip repaired before it starts to crack. You can be confident in my repairs. I use only Ultra Bond products that are the only products that restore your windshield to stronger than new. Nobody else is using Ultra Bond products in the Flagstaff area and cannot make the same claim. Nor will DIY kits give a repair that holds up over time.
