A crack needs to be fixed before it spreads

​

When a windshield cracks, it requires immediate attention before dirt infiltrates or the glass delaminates. There are three basic types of windshield cracks:

• Long Windshield Cracks 18" or less are typically repairable if not infiltrated by dirt or delaminated. Cracks over this length or spread across the entire windshield edge-to-edge will require replacement. Many technicians will only repair long cracks up to 6".

• Edge Windshield Cracks are cracks in a windshield that happen at the edge of the windshield where the windshield is weakest. This happens because of stress caused by the manufacturing process and stress caused by an object striking a windshield.                                                                                                                                                                             

• Floater Windshield Cracks are caused when cracks spread from an unrepaired chip in the middle of the windshield. Floaters are any crack that does not extend to an edge. The floater crack occurs when a chip has been ignored and cracks. You may find this kind of crack on a cold morning, since temperature changes cause cracks to spread from chips.

Do not attempt to repair a windshield crack using a DIY kit

To perform windshield repair for a crack, you will need a factory trained windshield repair technician with the right tools and structural adhesive resins in order to restore the windshield to pre-loss condition. I use only Ultra Bond tools and their specialized resins for optimum results, that DIY kits used by amateurs cannot match. A proper repair using Ultra Bond products will be stronger than original.
